When Can You Judge Your Child’s Fear to be Unhealthful?

It’s quite normal to be fearful of some things in life; as a matter of fact, the best way to set borders and restrictions to keep your self safe and healthy is by developing healthy fears. Fear is a crucial part of life because it explains you self-defense. It is in this sense, as humanistic therapy will argue, that fear is healthy; an unhealthy kind of fear is when it hinders you and prevents you from doing normal, meaningful tasks. Children experience fear and anxiety towards different kinds of situations depending on their age group, and some types of anxiety can actually be considered normal. In fact, such age appropriate fears can actually be helpful to children in terms of discovering their own personal limitations and having a sense of accomplishment when they conquer their fears. The fear of strangers, for example, is a common fear shared by very young children, although is also something that they naturally outgrow as they grow older and with the help and support of parents. A child who matures to be a teenager and who is still fighting with the terror of strangers may already be dealing with a phobia rather than a simple fear.

Many parents will find it hard not to be uneasy about their children’s phobias because no parent would want their child to be terrorized by something they think is imaginary. However, children in general get over this kind of fear eventually, as long as the parents do their part in helping their children. The good news is that children often do live through these phobias because they’re just phases and will eventually pass; dealing with real phobias, on the other hand, is not so simple.

For children who have developed unhealthy fears, its best if you can have a therapist check if it’s real phobia, and if it is, you can then investigate different kinds of therapies like play therapy to help your child get over it. In play therapy, children are allowed to play with a room full of toys or art objects, and children often play out their fears through this; for example, children with arachnophobia can envision or describe big spiders while playing. During play therapy, your child will be more comfortable with the thought of confronting apprehensions and together, you can learn more about what to do to help support your child.

Parents will be familiar with better about games and activities that can help children venture out of their comfort zone gradually; parents can also know more about what else they can do to help their children out. Many parents think that it’s alright to just order their child back to bed when they awaken in the middle of the night, scared of monsters; a lot of times, the meaning behind this is good but it doesn’t really help. It’s important that you don’t chase away your child’s fears through intimidation and further harassment, but to gently but firmly help your child push the limits of exploring situations that he or she finds to be fearful, until eventually, in his or her own pace, your child can finally deal with it on his or her own.

Teach your child in a gentle but firm and consistent way how to deal with phobias instead of denying the reality or concealing away from it. Take the phobia genuinely because this is something that can really change a lot in your child’s life, and the changes have the potential of robbing away some of the most important moments of your child’s life.
